Reducing Parental Conflict

All relationships can be hard at times. Bickering can be a part of life for most couples, and when it’s resolved well, it can do no harm. But when there’s too much arguing or shouting, or people are giving each other the silent treatment, it can impact the relationship and be harmful to the children.

By showing children how we deal with conflict and disagreements and role-modelling healthy relationships, we teach them how to manage their emotions effectively and communicate well as they get older.

Portsmouth City Council and Solent NHS Trust have partnered with the Solihull Approach to offer free access to expertly designed online courses for parents, carers, grandparents, and teens living in Portsmouth.

These are available in over 100 languages; they include antenatal courses for expectant parents and courses for parents with children aged 0 to 19 covering a variety of subjects, including Understanding Your Relationships.

If you would like further information, including details on accessing the free courses, please go to Family Assist and click on Portsmouth Family Hubs.

Parental relationship distress is different from domestic abuse. This is because there is no imbalance of power; neither parent seeks to control the other, and neither parent is fearful of the other.

No one should ever make you feel threatened or unsafe. If this is how you feel or you are worried about your own behaviour, there are organisations and services that are there to support you.
